You're all welcome here

Relationships are hard enough without ADHD, autism, trauma or misunderstood communication getting in the way.

I'm Tamra, a relationship counsellor and coach helping couples reconnect through greater understanding, emotional healing and practical relationship skills.

My interest in relationship therapy for the neurodiverse among us started from lived experience with my own partner.  Traditional relationship counselling we were seeking often assumed both partners communicate, process emotions and experience the world in similar ways. When neurodivergence is part of the relationship, those assumptions can sometimes leave couples feeling even more misunderstood.

Whether you're constantly having the same argument, feeling disconnected, navigating parenting, rebuilding intimacy, healing from past hurts, or trying to decide whether your relationship can recover, I'll help you understand the patterns keeping you stuck and create new ways of connecting.

My work integrates Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), ADHD informed care, ASD informed care, mindfulness and childhood trauma attachment model approaches. Rather than following one rigid model, I tailor therapy to the people sitting in front of me.

You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from working with me. Many couples simply recognise that one or both partners think differently, communicate differently, or experience the world differently. My role isn't to label people. It's to understand patterns, strengthen communication, and help each person feel seen and understood.

If you have a formal diagnosis, I can work with your current psychologist or psychiatrist as part of your care plan.  I don't provide diagnostic assessments.

Sessions take place in a peaceful space in the Adelaide Hills, surrounded by nature. Many clients comment that it feels more like stepping into a retreat than a clinical therapy room. If you're further away, I also offer online sessions via Zoom and Walk & Talk sessions in nature.

I welcome all relationship structures. Whether you're LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, questioning, or simply looking for a therapist who approaches people with curiosity rather than assumptions, you'll find a respectful and affirming space here.

How is neuro-affirming care different?

This is a safe space for you to be yourself and for your unique needs to be welcomed.  It is okay to walk around, stims are fine (I even have a fun bowl of fidgets), you are not expected to make eye contact, and sounds and lighting are not too obtrusive.  You can ask as many questions as you like about me and the environment to help you feel relaxed.

Secondly, some neurodivergent minds need a very different approach to relationships.  They can see relating entirely differently.  I know!  My partner and I both identify as "a bit neuro-spicy".  So I have both lived experience and formal training in this area.

  • An ADHDer given counselling homework might forget or get overwhelmed.

  • An Autistic person might struggle identifying feelings (their own, or their partner's) due to Alexithymia.

  • You could be very logic-focused, trying here to understand a world of 'right-brain'.  Perfectly okay.  I have tools for this.

  • Unmasking...

  • Shame and rejection sensitivity.

  • Executive functioning struggles.

I am not a neurodivergent individual therapist.  You still need to see your own therapist for that.  I specifically help with relating and intimacy.  If you have other co-occurring mental health conditions such as OCD or significant addiction, you do need to be actively managing this with an individual therapist for this for the relationship therapy to be effective.
